http://ejournal.ump.ac.id/index.php/proposisi/article/view/446

Public speaking competence is a critical skill in higher education, yet many students experience significant anxiety when required to speak in front of an audience. This study explores the challenges students face in a public speaking course and the coping strategies they employ to overcome them. The course integrates theoretical foundations with practical experiences, focusing on verbal and non-verbal communication, audience awareness, and structured presentation techniques. Through regular practice and guided reflection on emotional responses such as nervousness and anxiety, students learn to manage their apprehension, prepare systematically, and deliver persuasive messages effectively. The findings indicate that participation in the course not only enhances students’ communication competence but also strengthens their self-confidence and readiness for academic and professional communication contexts. By bridging theory and practice, the Public Speaking course provides a supportive learning environment that equips students with essential skills to navigate real-world communication challenges.
Aneiya Isni Neliku Aprilia, Dewi Puspitasari

http://ejournal.ump.ac.id/index.php/proposisi/article/view/420

Teguh Santoso

http://ejournal.ump.ac.id/index.php/proposisi/article/view/438

This study examines the use of social deixis in the film Muhammad: The Last Prophet (2002). The film remains relevant to contemporary contexts as it offers important lessons on how effective communication is constructed in society, particularly among individuals of diverse social statuses. Social deixis refers to the linguistic means by which social relationships and communicative contexts are reflected in language. The aim of this study is to identify the types of social deixis used in the film and to describe their functions. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were collected from dialogues in the film and analyzed based on Fillmore’s (1975) theory of social deixis. The analysis focuses on five types of social deixis: person marking, speech level, honorifics (including names, titles, and kinship terms), social acts, and linguistic performance. The findings indicate that social deixis in the film is realized through various linguistic forms and is shaped by factors such as participants, social relationships, and the communicative context. Furthermore, the use of social deixis reflects differences in social status and relationships among the characters. In conclusion, social deixis plays an essential role in conveying social meaning and shaping interpersonal interactions within the film.
La Afrina Atsiil, Bambang Hariyanto

http://ejournal.ump.ac.id/index.php/proposisi/article/view/338

This study explores Brandon Teena's fluidity of gender and sexual identity through the lens of gender performativity, as depicted in the film Boys Don't Cry (1999). This research is driven by an interest in how cinema represents the construction of gender identity, specifically how transgender characters negotiate societal expectations through performance. Using Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, this study examines how Brandon constructs his gender and sexual identity through his appearance, behavior, and interactions, revealing gender as a performative act shaped by repetition and social norms. Qualitative descriptive methods are used, focusing on film analysis to interpret visual and narrative elements such as costume, body movement, dialogue, and cinematography. This study also draws on Brannon and David's theory of masculinity to classify the types of masculinity Brandon performs in a rigid and homophobic environment. In order to support the data, the researcher collects information from diverse sources such as articles, journals, books, and online references that pertain to the gender and sexual performativity experience that Brandon Teena experienced. The findings of this study are expected to shed light on how Butler's gender performativity theory was applied to Brandon Teena's gender and sexual performativity in the film as a transgender character. This study is also practical in terms of providing insight into the topic of gender and sexual performativity in society, as well as allowing Brandon to personally experience how he feels about himself and society.
Winaya Nidaan Khofia, Eni Nur Aeni, Ririn Kurnia Trisnawati
